Well, Punkin's transition to the cube cage was a success!

We got him in April, and we've had him in the smaller cage (nighttime, and when no one's home) since then, because we are planning on painting, and I didnt want to put up the cube cage until we were done painting. Well, theyve been working me to death at work, and god only knows when we'll have a chance to paint. And finally, I was like "screw it, I'm putting the bigger cage back together". I felt so bad that he was stuck in this smaller cage at night. Plus it was virtually impossible to litterbox train him.

I kept the litterbox next to his small cage, always filled with hay, hoping he'd hop inside, eat and do his business. He got the eating part right, but never pottied inside.

If he'd been outside his cage for an hour or two, we'd put him back in the small cage for a few minutes to go potty, and this system seemed to work, but sometimes he'd have accidents. (except last weekend when he peed in our bed.. that was NO accident, but that's another story lol).

So yesterday, I set up the big cube cage, and put his water and food and toys in there, and scooped up some of his used litter and put it in the litterbox along with his hay. This morning, I woke up, and there was NO PEE on the floor of his cage, and the litterbox was filled with bunny poops! I mean, it was only the first night he was in the new cage.. who knows what I'll find tomorrow morning, but it's certainly a good sign!

I think he'll like the bigger cage during the times he has to be confined.

Punkin in the backyard

Well, the girls took the bunny outside for the first time. His former mommy said she'd let him out in the backyard last year, and she'd go back to get him a couple hours later, and that he loved running around. Yeah, no, that running around outdoors, unsupervised thing is not gonna happen around HERE. So we put on the ol' harness and lead, and took him to the backyard. He didnt care for it much. Then again, theres not alot TO our backyard. Open patio, covered patio, dirt. (Not even grass). Punkin was so scared to be out there.. he was shaking the whole time. And he didnt like getting his peeties dirty.. he kept trying to clean himself! After 10 minutes, I was like let's get him back in the house. We put him on the couch to take off his harness, and he peed. Good times.

Here he is, in all his Pink Harness Glory!

Chopper? Punkin?

I just wanted to say that Chopper is absolutely wonderful.
Actually, I shouldnt even call him Chopper anymore.. I pretty much call him Punkin, or Punkin Pie all the time. And something is telling me that he's a girl. I'm not positive, but that's the vibe I'm getting lol.

Punkin is so loving.. lately he's been following me around like a puppy. Whatever room I go into, there he is, right next to me. And he's always bonking my foot, ankle or legs for some loves.

He HAS been kind of destructive.. chewing on my new sofa (ugh), chewing on my carpet (eh, its old anyway). He's still not potty trained. He pees on my sofa at least 3 times a week. And a few days ago he peed on my husband's blanket. (I told him "It just means he smelled you, and he wanted to mark the blanket with his own scent, because he LOVES you!") So today, I'm laying on the couch, and Punkin jumps up next to me, and I feel.. "the warmth". Yup. I was the next pee victim. I wasnt thrilled.. I had to shower and clean the couch. So John comes home, and I'm like "OMG BLAH BLAH BLAH AND HE PEED ON ME!" and he starts laughing and goes "but that means he LOVES you!.. that's my boy, I should take him out for a steak!" I'm like "..shut up" lol

lol and right this second, Punkin is doing the Bunny 500 in the living room, and keeps running up to my ankles and bonking me before running off again.. i love this little guy lol

Update

I feel so BAD *insert sad face here* having to lock Chopper up in the cage when we're not home. But I have to remember that he's NOT Oreo, and he's NOT litterbox trained yet, and he still DOES get into mischief of one kind or another.

I still have him in that crappy small baby cage. We're supposed to paint the living room next weekend, and when we're all done, and everything is dry and back into place, I'll be able to rebuild the NIC condo, and hopefully then I can get him on track in becoming pottytrained, and even if he DOESNT have free run of the house, he'll have more room to putz around.

He really is a good boy, though. His favorite activity is finding ways to get inside my bedroom so he can lay under my bed. If laying under the bed was the ONLY thing he liked doing in there, I'd be fine with it, but he likes doing things like burrowing in piles of clean clothes, and sitting on a shelf in my bookcase and eating paper lol.

He's eating very well, loves his hay (which I suspect he didnt get in his previous home), and his poops look good (even though he thinks pooping down the hall near Katie's bedroom is the "in thing" to do).

Yup, adopting him was a very good decision, indeed : )

New bunny in da hizzouse!

Well.. we got him!
Still can't decide if we want to call him "chopper" (ugh), or "peetie".. i'm pretty much calling him "honey bunny" lol... He's just a little bigger than Oreo, and his gray is more of a charcoal gray (I expected a light gray), with white in basically the same spots that Oreo had white. John lay down on the floor, and chopper lay down next to him. (everyone repeat after me.. "awwwwwwwww"). It's awesome to have another bunny in the house. I gotta go to the pet supply store tomorrow to get him some food (his previous owner gave us his old food.. the kind with the crap in it) and she also gave us a big bag of pine bedding (me: "throw that crap away"). (i'm using something called "healthy pet" a fluffy paper bedding, until i get the condo set back up)

I'm just so excited! He's exploring the house.. he's gonna get so much love from us!

Since our camera is crap, and wont take decent pictures inside the house at nighttime, even with the flash, i'll take some pics of him tomorrow and post them.

Maybe.... just maybe..

Every day for the past three weeks, John has mentioned wanting to get a new bunny. He even went to a pet store to look at the bunnies one day. We ALL miss Oreo. (But remembering all the fun stuff takes the sting of her death away.. such as when I'd come home from grocery shopping, and she'd stick her head into each bag looking for food.. one time, she pulled out a pear and started munching on it lol).

John wanted to buy one from a pet store (!), but I told him that it's so close to easter, that we should wait until after that, and get an unwanted easter bunny from the shelter. Then his buddy mentioned something the other day.. he's got this friend who has a bunny, who's looking to get rid of it, because she and her husband want to travel. Two days ago, John and his buddy went to this lady's house, and he really liked this bunny. He's gray, lop-eared, a little bigger than Oreo with big feetsies, a year old.. his name is Chopper. John said Chopper let him hold him. He said we'd really like this bunny, and should we adopt it? He got an definite YES from the rest of us.

He told his buddy yesterday, to call this lady, and tell her we'd like to have Chopper, and his buddy goes "how soon do you want him?" and John goes "ASAP". I was kinda hoping we could hold off getting a new bunny until after we painted the living room, but obviously, if we get Chopper sooner than that, so be it.. we can deal.

So there's a really good chance that when I get home from work tonight around 7pm, there will be a new bunny in our house. I'm giving John a list of questions, such as "Is he neutered? Is he litterbox trained? What does he eat?" (the neutering is no problem, if hes not, we'll get it done sooner or later.. the litterbox training is no problem, I heard older bunnies are easier to train than babies... the food thing is no problem, but I'd like to get an idea of what he eats so his diet isnt drastically changed in one day).

I *might* have to change his name.. We probably shouldnt, but John has this old friend who's nickname is Chopper, and the guy's a total loser.. the girls want to call him "Peetie", because he supposedly has bigger feet (feetsies aka peeties) than Oreo had. I dont really care for the name Peetie, but it doesnt really matter, considering I'll probably call him "punkin pie" or "honey bunny" or something lol.

I'm so excited.. theres a gray bunny out there who's gonna get a LOT of love very very soon.. hopefully tonight!

I was hoping it would be years and years and years before I had to write this post, unfortunately, sometimes the things that bring us the greatest joy are taken from us way too soon.

I posted this in yesterdays bunnyowners community:

Hubby woke me up about 4:20 this morning.. he told me to come look at the bunny. Oreo was flopped over on the kitchen floor. She NEVER goes in the kitchen. She hates the linoleum in there. Then she started rolling. The uncontrollable rolling. I burst into tears and picked her up. She let me hold her. She hasnt let me hold her in over a year. Her head was tilted. Her eyes were darting back and forth. I knew it must be head tilt, or wry neck, or whatever it's called.

We put her in the baby bunny cage that she used to live in when we first got her. She'd just roll around uncontrollably in the cage. She looked so scared. She was probably thinking "MOMMY?? WHATS WRONG WITH ME???" I cried. My husband cried. She was perfectly fine last night when we went to bed!!

My daughters and I brought her to the vet the minute they opened. The vet said it *might* be an ear infection, but because of how suddenly and severely this condition came about, plus how she didnt have control of her eye movements, he said it was most likely a stroke, or a blood clot in the brain, or some other neurological problem.

We had no choice but to put her to sleep.

I've never cried this much before. I miss her so much I cant even handle it.

We love you so much Oreo. You'll always be in our hearts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
one day later:
I find great comfort in talking about all the wonderful and silly things she did, with my husband and kids. I also find comfort in knowing we gave her a wonderful life, and in turn, she gave us so much happiness. The pain isnt as raw as it was yesterday. Still hurts, but Ive got so many wonderful memories of her : )
Well, we bunnysat Nick's bunny this week. It was really nice to have a second bunny around the house. Instead of getting him on Monday, they brought him over on Saturday, which was pretty cool, cuz we were all excited to have him visit.
He was in a cage, and like Katie told me, the other Oreo (I'm gonna call him "the little guy" or "the little bunny", cuz thats pretty much what i called him all week) never really gets let out of his cage at home so he can run around. We gave him plenty of time to run and jump and play and explore. What an energetic little hotot he is!!!! The little guy made OUR Oreo look like a lazy bump on a log lol.
Oreo was interested in the little guy, but when the he got too close to her, she'd lunge at him, so we pretty much kept them separated all week. If Oreo was sleeping in our room, we'd shut the door to let the little guy out. Same thing, if Oreo was laying down in her condo, we'd shut the door so she couldnt get to the little bunny. One time, however, Oreo's condo door was open, and the little bunny ran in there and started humping her. Oreo. Did. Not. Enjoy. This.
..of course, we all laughed, but we got the little guy outta her cage before Oreo tried to bite him or something.
When the little fella was in his cage, Oreo would come around and check him out.. they'd sniff (or sometimes lick) each other thru the bars. The little bunny was TOTALLY infatuated by Oreo though.. I felt bad she didnt fall in love with him lol.
Even though the little bunny wasnt neutered, he never once messed up our carpet or anything. I found a stray poop here and there, but thats it.. and absolutely no peeing except in his cage, which shocked me.. i totally expected a bunch of peeing from an intact male lol.
All in all, it was a nice week with another bunny to take care of. The little guy even sat on katies lap and let her pet him for a half hour at a time. Oreo hasnt let us do that for about a year now.
well anyhoo, heres a few pictures that i took:
Sittin in the potty box we gave him:
Looking cute for the camera:
"Is this my good side?"
To show you the size comparison of the 2 Oreos:
My Oreo enjoys taunting the other one, by sitting with her back to him.
She did this alot. I think it was her way of saying "yeah, i know you're there, and i know you want me. but i'm gonna pretend to ignore you" (what a little snot lol)
The little bunny's eating something outta his potty box.
Might be food. Might be poop.
Don't know.
This is Oreo, going ".. is he EVER going home?"
His owners picked him up this morning. Someone asked "Does Oreo miss him?"
I was like "..shes been laying around alot. either she misses him, or shes being lazy. I'm gonna put my money on lazy."
.. but we kinda miss the little fella already
There's a NEW GAME at our house..
Katie sticks her head in the doorway of Oreo's Cottontail Cottage, and Oreo starts licking her head.
Lick. Lick. Lick.
So here comes Amber, barrelling thru the house.. "OMG LET ME TRY!!!" and shoves Katie out of the way, and sticks her own head in Oreo's cottage.
Lick. Lick. Lick.
Of course, by the time I get the cell phone with the camera, Oreo is done licking my girl's foreheads.
But damn, what would compell someone to stick their HEAD in a cardboard box that contains a rabbit? I mean, Oreo could have slapped the shit out of either one of the girls lol.
And I would have LAUGHED, cuz I'm mean like that lol.
A question: Do you have a cat? How much do cats weigh? Me and Amber are having a disagreement over what would hurt more? A bunny or a cat jumping up on top of you while youre sitting on the couch. (Oreo weighs about 7 pounds, for the record).
Hopefully I can get some good head-licking pictures to post soon : )
Oh Em Gee.
I woke up this morning and Katie was already awake, and she's like "MOM! LOOK! OREO IS ON THE TABLE!!!"
...i'm like "...WHAT table?"
"the DINING ROOM table!"
see, recently, my parents sold their house and got an apartment. They had to downsize, and also replace their house furniture with new apartment furniture, so guess who got everything? (*points to self*)
So Oreo's favorite corner that she slept in was disturbed, and she started hanging out in her Cottontail Cottage (which is now between my computer desk and the dining room table).
I guess in the middle of the night, she figured out how to jump from the top floor of the Cottontail Cottage to the dining room table.. yeah, cuz THERES A DECORATED GINGERBREAD HOUSE on the table and NOW HALF THE GUMDROPS ARE EATEN OFF!! (..guess Oreo thought it was the tv remote lol).
... dont these rabbits EVER stop getting into mischief? lol
awwwww
Katie said she saw that Boomer and Thumper and Meat bunny were featured on www.ilovemybunny.com, so she HAD to send in a picture of Oreo lol.
So I get home from the store, and shes like "Mom! Go on that site and see if Oreo's picture is on there yet!" and it was lol. She sent one where Oreo was flopped over in her cage. ..she looks dead in that picture lol, but as us bunny owners know, a dead-lookin bunny is usually just a laid-back, relazin bunny lol. So yeah, that was pretty cool to see her on there.
For a while now, Oreo's been letting herself out of her cage in the middle of the night. It's fine, because the house is always bunny-proofed, plus we keep the light above the kitchen sink on at night, so the dining room and living room area arent completely dark.
So lately, we wake up in the middle of the night to the clip-clop sounds of her nails against our hardwood bedroom floor. (Some nights, I wake up EVERY TIME she comes into the bedroom, but I dont mind). Matter of fact, the other day I told my husband I'd like to put a box with some hay in it next to my side of the bed, so she can make herself comfortable there if she wants.
So anyhoo, about 4:30 this morning (I guess I was sleeping pretty soundly, because Oreo didnt wake me up), John's like "... shhh look next to you" and it took me a minute to wake up and realize what the hell he was talking about, but right next to me on the bed.. was OREO! Very quietly, I was like "hi baby", but then she jumped off the bed and ran out to the living room. (John said it was her way of telling us to wake up and hang out with her lol).
I just thought it was sweet. A few times she's jumped up next to me on the sofa, but never on the bed. I kinda hope to get bunny surprises like that again in the near future : )
Not alot new has been going on here with Oreo, except that we love her more and more every day!!
A friend of my husband's has an albino bunny with sticky up ears. Or should I say.. "had". He kept this bunny outside in a hutch, but they have two kids who paid alot of attention to the bun, and they seemed to take *fairly* good care of it, as far as we could tell.
So one day a couple of weeks ago, the kids let the bunny out of the hutch to run around in the yard, and didnt pay attention for a few minutes.. yup, their dog had the bunny in his mouth.. either he hurt the bunny when he picked it up, or the bunny died of fright, but either way, now they dont have a bunny any more : (
The sad thing is, I think my husband was more traumatized by this white bunny's death, than his friend was (the friend just kinda laughed and shrugged it off, with a "thats life" kind of attitude).
Then last week, my katie came home from school, and told me that her friend Nick has to get rid of his pet rabbit. Hes a black and white sticky-up ear rabbit, ALSO named Oreo. I dont know what prompted the mom to want to give away this rabbit after having him for a year. But I always felt like they thought of a bunny as a glorified hamster or something.. in other words, he was strictly a stay-in-the-small-cage and only-hold-him-occasionally rabbit. Not litter trained, not free-range, not neutered.
For a split second, I considered taking him in, but we're still not ready for another bunny yet. (fuck, it took me eight years to decide if i was ready to have a second KID for god sakes!) I have no idea what this bunny's fate is going to be.. I almost feel so guilty for not wanting to take him. But all these questions run thru my head.. Is he socialized? Would he and my Oreo get along? Is he healthy? I'm I willing to double the vet bills etc? I had to tell myself that I'm NOT a rescue and I cant save every rabbit that comes along. It may be selfish of me, but I feel its "realistic". I really dont want to take on more than I'm willing to.
Wow. Oreo's been something else recently lol.
Last night I was laying on the sofa, watching Iron Chef, and I go "come here, Oreo" cuz I wanted to pet her. She usually ignores me, but not this time, she ran up to me and laid down on the floor next to me, so I could reach down and pet her. But after a while, I started dozing, and I guess I stopped petting her, and I feel this THUNK. She jumped on the back of my knees and walked up my back. So I wake up and go "hi baby" in my squeaky mommy-talking-to-baby-bunny voice, and she jumped down and laid back down in her "petting spot" next to me. I was like "damn".. she just wanted to get my attention so I'd pet her again. [insert awwww here].
When I went to bed, it took me like a half hour to trick her into her cage. Silly wabbit. But I got up at 4am to go to the bathroom, and guess who had already broken out of bunny jail? That's right lol. Then she was chewing on one of my John's shoes. So I picked the shoes up and put them on a chair. I turn my back and she's chewing on one of Amber's shoes. Then shes chewing up a magazine. It seemed like every time I turned around, she was getting in some kind of mischief lol.
It's pretty funny, cuz when she was a baby, she used to have days like that.. it was like following a toddler around. She's been really good lately, but last night and this morning.. sheesh. Guess I gotta make sure the house is extra bunny-proofed today before I go to work lol.
The other day, I posted http://www.livejournal.com/community/bunnyowners/1750121.html in bunnyowners, and it was about how Oreo got scared and busted out of her cage.
This morning, something a little different happened.
I heard this one sound.. it sounded like when Oreo hops into her pottybox a little TOO enthusiastically and hits the side of her cage with her body.
It was 5am, and I had to get up and go to the bathroom anyway, so I checked on Oreo. Her cage door was OPEN.
She didnt "bust" out this time.. she pulled off 4 of the 5 velcro strips that keep her door closed. One was still hanging from the top (i usually put 2 across the top of the door, and 3 along the side).
She was just sitting in her corner, as pretty as you please.
I was like "Oreo, did you break out of bunny jail??"
Then proceded to pet her little head, and scratch behind her neck.
Oh well. I dont want to use anything stronger than velcro to keep her door shut, especially after what happened the other night.
I guess thats just her way of saying "I dont LIKE to be locked up"
John found a new "game" to play with Oreo...
He lies down on the floor on his side, and one arm, from the elbow to the hand, is raised off the floor. He holds a much-desired craisin in his hand. Oreo KNOWS he's got a craisin, so she'll circle his arm, round and round and round, then she'll stand up, and kinda slap at his closed hand. (by the way, we need to have her nails cut soon lol). Then she circles the other way and does the same thing. She'll do that several times until he lets her "win", and she pins his hand down to the ground, and gets the nummy craisin treat. I swear to god, those two crack me up with their little games lol
Today, I had to clean the mouse's cage for the first time. The only way I could figure out how to clean it was to put the cage in the bathtub, and take it apart in there. While I was carrying the freshly-cleaned cage back to the dining room, Oreo followed me (she was curious as to what I was carrying). So I put the mouse's cage on the floor, and Oreo was smelling it and smelling it. She even stood on her hind legs to check out the top of the cage (it's a S.A.M. habitat, fully plastic, so I didnt worry about Oreo actually getting to the mouse).
Then Katie asked if bunnies can eat cantalope. "hmmmm..." says I. So I promptly consulted the Bunny Bible (rabbit.org) and it said cantalope was safe for rabbits. I warned Katie that Oreo might be afraid of it and run away, just like she did the first time I offered her banana, but nope! She grabbed it and ran behind the dining room table to devour it (you know.. she HAD to hide in case we wanted to take it back or something).
So then Katie gets herself a bowl of cantalope chunks, and sits down on the sofa to eat them. Oreo runs over to Katie and starts BEGGING for a piece. When another treat wasnt forthcoming, she hopped up on the sofa, and started climbing up Katie to get a piece of melon goodness. I was laughing so hard... here's Katie, holding her bowl up in the air, yelling "HELPPPPPPPP!!!!! HELPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!111"
Man, that was great.
I swear... I wonder if Oreo is a DOG, not a bunny!
Every time we go in the kitchen, she follows us in there. looking_for_food.
She's too funny.
And lately, she's been very very sassy. She's had more and more freedom around the house (most of the time, we let her have free-run of the house when no one's at home now), and usually only make her go in her condo when it's bedtime. She KNOWS the various tricks we use to get her into the cage, and she runs and hides when we try them. Kinda like "nuh uh, no way.. you aint locking ME up!!!"
I'm not ready for her to have free-run at night, because a) we keep our bedroom door open at night (so we can hear the kids in case they need us), and b) we're afraid we might step on her if we walk in the dark, and c) our bedroom really isnt bunny proof, and im not sure what kinda trouble she'd get into. So anyway, the only way I can lure her into her cage at night, is with 2 craisins... no other treat works lol.
One thing i've noticed different about her since her spay a few months ago.. she wont let us pick her up. Not even Katie, who she ALWAYS let pick her up. In the very beginning, we thought, "maybe her incision is still hurting.." but that excuse doesnt work anymore. But she's still as loving as she used to be. AND she hasnt peed ONE TIME out of her litterbox. Which is awesome.
I was wondering, does anyone feed their bunny it's greens more than one time a day? Oreo usually gets hers around 7pm. (and gets an 1/8 cup of pellets in the morning, and before bed as well). She's a little hog, and I'm sure she'd eat her veggies 23849230s3iuo3 times a day if i let her lol.
Wow lol
I looked at Oreo at a different angle today, and thought HOLY SHIT, HER DEWLAP IS GONE!!!! After closer inspection, however, I realized her dewlap is still there, but it definitely looks smaller.
I think I'm going to dig out the trusty digi cam this weekend and take a few pics of her (it's been awhile.. I've been lazy), and maybe compare the dewlap to a picture I took of her a couple months ago, in which it looked HUGE.
A few weeks ago, we almost had a opportunity to take another bunny into our home. My husband's friend at work (Eric) has a buddy.. this buddy is an idiot. For instance, last year, he got his kids a baby duck for easter, and within a week their family dog ATE the duck (dubbya tee eff).
So this easter, the idiot gets his kids a bunny. Eric sees how we treat Oreo like a member of the family, and felt that his buddy's bunny was being neglected (they have it outside). He asked my husband "If I sneak over there in the middle of the night and steal it, will you take it?".. so my husband says "yes"
He comes home and tells me this. My first instinct was "BUNNY!!!".. and thought "hey, if I can stop a rabbit from being neglected.."
Then I started thinking some more. I mean, to steal a bunny from someone? This bunny is outside, and maybe it IS being taken care of. (Although I'm a firm advocate of having bunnies in the house with the people who love them, vs being outside in a hutch).
And I DO want another bunny, but I kinda planned on one day going to a rescue and letting Oreo have play dates and stuff.. you know.. letting HER pick out a friend.
So last week, John comes home from work and says "I guess we're not getting that bunny; Eric couldnt bring himself to take it"
Yeah, I was actually relieved.
... but if Eric ever comes over here with the bunny and says "will you take it?", I'm not going to turn it away.
